Wonderful World of Water Day Camp
Allegheny County -Green Tree Nature Center –July 21-22 - 9AM -3PM
Upper Saint Clair - Regional Environmental Education Center – August 11-12 – 9AM – 3 PM
This summer PRC will once again partner with the PA American Water Company (PAWC) to offer the fourth annual Wonderful World of Water Day Camp. Four day camps, funded by PAWC (and therefore free-of-charge) and offered in Allegheny, Butler and Chester Counties, will provide two fun-filled days each of outdoor fun and education around water issues and stewardship. Green Tree Borough (Allegheny County) and Regional Environmental Education Center (Upper Saint Clair, have generously provided beautiful settings for the western PA camps. |
Campers, ages 7-11, explore the watershed, water basics, and current water quality issues through interactive instruction, hands-on activities, crafts, hikes and games. Highlights include visits from some very exciting guests. Verna McGinley, a Pittsburgh naturalist, has afforded campers the opportunity to get up close and personal with water critters such as frogs, toads, turtles, snakes, and salamanders since the camp’s inception. Campers, donning goggles and rubber gloves and using chemistry equipment behave as young chemists as PAWC staff guide them in experimenting with water filtration and purification techniques. Campers also learn about how local animals are affected by impacts on our watershed, and enjoyed nature hikes/litter pick-ups at our beautiful camp sites and have many thrills playing games such as water balloon volleyball and various water relays. Even meals and snacks are used to convey educational messages. Campers learn about the importance of waste reduction by packing zero waste lunches, and composting and recycling everything used at camp.
As a result of PAWC’s generous commitment to this endeavor all campers are able to enjoy the Wonderful World of Water Day Camps free-of-charge! Many 2008 campers expressed an interest in returning in 2009 and facilitators as well look forward to partnering this summer with PAWC to provide this fun-filled educational experience.
